Five months after its July debut, Meta’s social network Threads has now extended its reach to residents of the European Union (EU), as announced by Mark Zuckerberg on the platform. This expansion includes a “Use without a profile” feature on the Threads.net website, enabling EU users to access the platform without logging in through Instagram. However, users in this mode can only view posts and are unable to engage by liking, reposting, or replying.
When utilizing Threads without a profile in the EU, users will encounter a single algorithmically generated feed. While account searches are possible, it seems that searching for specific posts may not be supported.
At the initial July launch, Meta restricted access to Threads in the EU to align with bloc regulations. During this period, app downloads were unavailable, and Threads lacked a web version for post access via URLs. Additional measures were implemented to prevent EU users from using VPNs to access the social network.
This official EU launch follows a Wall Street Journal report predicting Threads’ introduction to the EU in December. Threads signalled this move with a countdown timer on its homepage, pointing to a December 14 launch in the region.

Mark Zuckerberg mentioned during Meta’s Q3 earnings call that Threads had fewer than 100 million monthly active users. The EU expansion is anticipated to contribute to surpassing this user milestone.
In a recent development, Zuckerberg announced that Threads is experimenting with ActivityPub integration, potentially allowing posts from Threads to appear on compatible decentralized networks like Mastodon.
